Specialty Lidding Films and Custom Printed Film Designs

Our Printed Lidding Films replace the traditional label, cutting costs and reducing materials & manpower. Instead of buying label stock, printing labels, sealing your product, and then applying the label, accomplish the same in one simple step by using Preferred Packaging’s Printed Lidding Films.

We manufacture, and print our own in-house film to work with our thermoformed trays and lidding machines. With more than thirty years of experience with film and its sealing characteristics, we know which film is ideally suited for each lid seal application—ask us for a recommendation!

We offer up to eight-color process printing on our lidding films, which means we can print contents, ingredients, trademark and product names, bar codes, and advertising with stellar results. In addition, we offer a surface print and a reverse printed film buried within a protective laminate layer. We are happy to assist our customers with full print design as well.

Preferred Packaging’s films are available up to 60 inches wide and come in the following varieties:

  • Multilayer Laminate Film - a film that combines the strength of the polyester upper layer with the specific sealant type and thickness designed for your seal system requirements. The top layer’s gloss and clarity can be used to enhance the appearance of your print copy while protecting it from abrasion during shipping and handling.
• Barrier Film - a film used in Modified Atmosphere Packaging (a.k.a. MAP or Gas Flush). These films preserve and prolong the characteristics of any sealed package.
• Perforated Film - a film that is allows controlled evacuation of heat and moisture. Perforated film is used for foods such as chicken fingers, which will remain crisp during the reheat process. Also used to allow required escape of gases created by fresh salads, fruits, seafoods and similar products.

Preferred Packaging Lidding Machines

Preferred Packaging’s IDX machines utilize a platten seal head, which is the superior method to seal trays because the flat seal head makes 100 percent contact with the tray for a firm seal. Dwell time is one to one-and-a-half seconds of full-pressure contact before the platten head releases and the machine is ready to index the next tray.

If speed is a high priority and finished product handling is minimal, you might consider our low-cost Dual Roller machine. Instead of the stop-start indexing system, a roller machine’s conveyor is constantly moving under a revolving heated silicone or metal roller that makes contact with the tray as it rolls underneath. Compare that to the much longer full tray contact of the platten head, and know that there is a tradeoff between heat seal time and product handling capabilities. Like the IDX line, our Dual Roller machines are available with extended infeed length, automatic denester, and other features.

The HS 48 Manual Heat Seal machine is the perfect solution for individual school cafeterias and other medium volume operations. A switch from one tray size to another can be made instantly, and the cost for extra seal pockets is minimal.

Stock and Custom Thermoformed Trays for the Food Service Industry

Our Stock Thermoformed Trays for the Food Service Industry

Preferred Packaging offers a stock line of over one hundred unique thermoformed trays used to package virtually any type of food and serving size. We thermoform most of these in-house, but have also supplied tooling to third-party
manufacturers.

For a sampling of stock trays and containers that we offer, consider this partial list: sandwich wedges; platters for salad and meals; one, two, or three compartment entrée containers; bakery items for overwrap equipment; specialty salad containers; small single portion fruit containers; larger combination drink, snack, and sandwich trays for school use; trays for hot dogs, hoagies, and grinders; casserole containers; bagel containers; and ovenable trays.

Custom Thermoformed Trays

If you have an unusual tray requirement, we can custom produce it for you. Based on the size and material configuration, we will offer design options for the tray before we move on to the next phase. Tray prototypes typically cost $500-$1,000 and take about three weeks to produce. Once the custom thermoformed sample is approved, it takes 4-6 weeks to produce the tooling necessary to start production.

We find that most custom orders are for single-portion servings, but we have the ability to create unusually small or multi-serving trays; we’ve produced custom trays as small as 2x4 inches and as large as 28x18 inches.

Preferred Packaging’s custom trays are made from a variety of materials including OPS HIPS, APET, and polyproplene. Options include material thickness, embossing, barrier properties (anti-fog, microwavable), and clamshell versus lid-sealed film (printed lidding film is another Preferred Packaging specialty). Custom colors are often available, depending on the material used and the quantity ordered–browse our catalog here.
